In Florida Keys you find the Overseas Highway. It is 127.5 miles long and was build to connect the Islands between Key Largo and Key West.
The railroad bridges used in the construction had been a part of the historic railroad route that ran the length of The Florida Keys, but which was dramatically damaged and partly destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane in 1935.
The railroad company did not have the money to finance the rebuilding of the railroad, so it was sold to the state, which utilized 42 defunct railroads bridges in the construction along with the construction of miles of highway.
Today most of the railroad bridges have been replaced with more modern bridges, so that there are more than two lanes of traffic.
Earlier The Seven Mile Bridge, The Bahia Honda Bridge and The Long Key Bridge was part of the highway, but they have now been closed for vehicles, except for a part of The Seven Mile Bridge.
It is one of the longest, if not the longest, segmented bridge in the world.
The highway contains 19.3 miles of bridge spans.
