Living in Marathon is living in "The Heart of The Florida Keys" because it is located at the mid-point in the chain of islands (MM 50). This makes it a perfect base for exploring all of the Florida Keys.
I first came to Florida Keys and Marathon back in 1983. Ever since I have enjoyed living here and one of my favorite things to do in my spare time is fishing.
It is a charming tropical town with some of the best beaches and water sports in the World.
It has retained much of the romantic history of a 19th century fishing village, but at the same time the town has also been modernized providing up-to-date amenities.
While most of the waters around here are open to fishing, some are designated for fish viewing and eco-tourism.
It is also home to the only living coral barrier reef in North America, Sombrero Reef is a protected marine area lying several miles offshore.
It is also here you find the Sombrero Beach (MM 50), which is a public beach with picnic facilities and a playground for children.
Boot Key Harbor (MM 49) is located on the oceanside and is one of the United States' rare protected harbors with nearby docks, launching ramp, fuel, boat rentals and restaurants.
Crane Point (MM50.5) is located on the bayside, is a 63.5-acre tract that is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in the Keys.
In April every year the annual Seven Mile Bridge Run is held here, when more than 1500 runners make the challenging run over the longest and one of the most uniquely beautiful bridges in the world.
Are you looking for some indoor activity, you can enjoy a theatre performance at the community theatre, enjoy the artwork of the Florida Keys Watercolor Society, take the house and garden tour, or hear a classical concert at San Pablo Church.
It is located at the heart of The Florida Keys marine habitat, where kayakers can paddle through the shallows and observe sea turtles or tropical fish, or watch egrets and herons catching fish.
